Science at Rood End Primary School
At Rood End Primary School, we are committed to nurturing hope and ambition in every child through an engaging and inspiring science curriculum. Our approach encourages curiosity and enthusiasm for science, helping children understand how scientific knowledge can influence their futures and the world around them.
Our Approach to Science Learning
We believe that science education should be exciting, hands-on, and accessible to all children. Reflecting our core values of Respect, Resilience, Inclusivity, Collaboration, and Honesty, our science lessons are designed to foster a deep understanding of scientific concepts while supporting every child to achieve their potential.
Building Knowledge and Skills
- Planned Progression: Our science curriculum follows a carefully structured sequence that builds on children’s current knowledge and skills. This ensures that gaps in understanding are identified and addressed promptly.
- Focused Learning: Lessons centre on topic-specific knowledge questions, helping children grasp essential scientific facts and ideas rather than solely focusing on scientific enquiry skills.
- Retention and Retrieval: At the start of every science lesson, children spend 5 to 10 minutes answering retrieval questions to reinforce their memory of previous learning and clarify misconceptions.
Working Scientifically
- Practical Learning: Wherever possible, children engage in practical activities using real objects and scientific equipment appropriate to their year group. This hands-on approach helps children develop a strong understanding of scientific processes and methods.
- Inquiry and Exploration: Children are encouraged to ask questions, test ideas, and experiment collaboratively. This supports the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills, aligning with our vision of nurturing resilience and collaboration.
- Use of Resources: We maximise use of our local environment and resources to connect science learning to real-life applications, helping children see the relevance of science today and in their futures.
Real-Life Experiences
- Field Trips: Children take part in science-focused field trips that enrich their learning by providing opportunities to explore science in the world around them.
- Community Connection: Our curriculum links science to everyday life and future possibilities, helping children appreciate how science impacts society and their own lives.
