British Values at our school
At Rood End Primary School, we believe that British values are an important part of helping every child grow into a caring, responsible member of society. Our school values—Respect, Resilience, Inclusivity, Collaboration, and Honesty—reflect the key British values: Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect, and Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs.
Understanding & Living British Values
We make sure British values aren’t just words but part of everyday life at school, shaping how children behave, learn, and get along with others.
- Democracy: We give children a voice through the School Council and class talks, teaching them about voting, decision-making, and listening to different opinions.
- Rule of Law: Children learn why rules matter, both in school and beyond, so they understand that laws keep everyone safe and treated fairly.
- Individual Liberty: We encourage children to be confident, make safe choices, express themselves, and be proud of who they are.
- Mutual Respect: Respect is at the heart of everything we do. We teach children to value themselves and others, showing kindness and understanding every day.
- Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs: Our school community is wonderfully diverse. We celebrate this through lessons, assemblies, and special events that help children appreciate different cultures and beliefs
How We Bring British Values to Life
- Assemblies & Discussions: These incorporate British values, linking them to real-life stories and current events to make it meaningful.
- Curriculum Links: Subjects like PSHE, history, and religious education include topics about democracy, justice, liberty, and cultural diversity.
- You Be You Programme: This special programme helps children celebrate who they are while learning to respect others, building their confidence and resilience.
- Pupil Voice: Through the School Council and class discussion, children practise democracy and learn how their opinions can make a difference
Celebrating Our Diverse Community
With most of our children speaking English as an additional language, our school is a vibrant mix of cultures and languages. We make sure every child feels welcome and proud to share their story.
We do this by:
- Encouraging children to listen and learn from each other’s experiences.
- We hold cultural events and encourage children to share their own backgrounds, helping everyone understand and appreciate the variety of beliefs and traditions at our school.
- Creating a safe space where everyone can speak honestly and be heard.
- Helping children support each other when things get tough.
Why These Values Matter To Us
By embracing British values, we help children:
- Develop a strong sense of fairness and justice.
- Understand their rights and responsibilities as individuals and part of the community.
- Build confidence to speak up respectfully.
- Appreciate and celebrate diversity, preparing them for life in a multicultural world.
- Play a positive role in school and the wider community.
How You Can Help
We ask parents and carers to support these values by:
- Talking about them at home and encouraging children to share what they’re learning.
- Joining in school events that celebrate diversity and community.
- Encouraging respect, tolerance, and open-mindedness every day.
- Getting involved with programmes like You Be You to help children grow in confidence and respect for others.
