Reading at Rood End

At Rood End, we believe that reading opens doors to knowledge and imagination for every child. Our reading curriculum is designed to help children develop strong reading skills while fostering a genuine love of books and stories. This reflects our vision of nurturing hope and ambition, supported by our values of Respect, Resilience, Inclusivity, Collaboration and Honesty.

How We Teach Reading

From Nursery to Year 6, we use proven methods and quality books to support every child’s reading journey.

Early Years and KS1

We use the Little Wandle Phonics programme, which helps children learn the sounds letters make and how to blend them into words. This approach builds a solid foundation for reading with confidence and fluency.

KS2

Older children continue to develop their reading through programmes like Little Wandle Fluency and Little Wandle Letters & Sounds (Phonics) and targeted catch-up support where needed. We also use Grammarsaurus Comprehension Crusher to deepen their understanding of texts, improve vocabulary, and build skills in discussing and writing about what they read.

Each Comprehension Crusher units includes:

  • Modelled examples to demonstrate effective reading strategies
  • Vocabulary work to broaden word knowledge
  • Fluency practice to build smooth and expressive reading
  • Review sessions to consolidate learning
  • Activating prior knowledge to connect new ideas to what children already know
  • Shared practice to develop confidence through guided reading
  • Independent practice to encourage application of skills independently

Teachers across all year groups read aloud daily to enrich vocabulary and help children understand a broad range of texts.

Why Fluency Matters

Fluency is a vital part of reading development because it bridges word recognition and comprehension. When children read fluently, they can focus less on decoding each word and more on understanding the meaning of the text. Fluent readers read with speed, accuracy, and expression, which helps them enjoy stories and learn from texts more effectively.

Supporting Every Child

We know many of our children come from diverse backgrounds, with a large number learning English as an additional language. Our reading programme is designed to support all learners, helping every child feel included and confident.

  • We encourage children to share their thoughts and listen to others, building respect and teamwork through group reading activities.
  • We help children develop resilience by supporting them through challenges in reading, celebrating their progress along the way.
  • Conversations about learning help build honesty and trust between children and teachers, and encourage children to reflect on their learning.

What This Means for Your Child

Choosing Rood End means your child will:

  • Receive reading support tailored to their needs, whether they are new to English or need extra help.
  • Learn in a caring environment where every child’s background is valued.
  • Build strong communication skills and confidence through reading, setting them up for success in school and beyond.

How You Can Help at Home

We invite parents and carers to join in by sharing books, talking about stories, and celebrating your child’s progress.

Together, we can inspire a love of reading that lasts a lifetime.
