Maths at Rood End Primary School

At Rood End Primary School, we’re passionate about helping children build confidence, curiosity, and a deep understanding of maths. We believe a strong foundation in maths empowers children to succeed both in school and in life. Our approach reflects our core values – respect, resilience, inclusivity, teamwork, and honesty – ensuring every child feels supported and ready to learn

How We Teach Maths

Maths at Rood End is more than just numbers; it’s a way for children to make sense of the world around them. We aim to make maths enjoyable, clear, and accessible for all children, no matter their starting point.

Getting the Basics Right

  • We use the Mastering Number programme in Reception and Key Stage 1 to build solid number sense and counting skills.
  • Our daily lessons follow the White Rose scheme, providing hands-on, practical activities that cover all aspects of maths.
  • In early years, number songs, rhymes, and Numberblocks bring maths learning to life as play.

Building Confidence, Reasoning, and Problem Solving

  • Every day, children practice key skills to improve their speed and confidence with times tables and number facts.
  • A special focus is our Maths Talk Time, where children work together to solve problems and explain their reasoning. This helps them develop critical thinking and communication skills.
  • To support this, teachers model sentence stems such as “I know this because…” or “The pattern I see is…” which enable pupils to articulate their mathematical thinking clearly and confidently.
  • Teachers use clear, simple language throughout lessons to help children talk about their learning and deepen their understanding.

Maths All Around Us

  • Maths learning happens everywhere—in the classroom, outdoor areas, and during play.
  • Outdoor activities encourage children to explore shapes, sizes, and measurement through natural objects and games.
  • For our youngest children everyday routines, like tidying up, become opportunities to sort, count, and compare, making maths a natural part of school life.

Supporting Every Learner

With many children speaking English as an additional language, we prioritise language support in maths. Clear instructions, visual aids, and scaffolded talk help all children access and engage with maths lessons.

Teachers carefully build on what each child already knows, providing encouragement and challenge to help every learner progress. We celebrate all achievements and aim to deepen children’s understanding every step of the way.

Maths in Action

When you visit Rood End, you’ll see children actively exploring maths with real objects, confidently discussing patterns and numbers, and enjoying learning through practical, hands-on experiences. These moments build strong foundations and a love of maths that lasts.

How You Can Help at Home

Parents and carers can support children by:

  • Talking about numbers, shapes, and measurements in daily life
  • Playing games and doing activities that encourage mathematical thinking
  • Encouraging children to explain how they solved problems or worked something out

Together, we can help children become confident, capable mathematicians.

We combine clear teaching with fun, practical experiences and a strong focus on talking through maths to build understanding and confidence. With respect, support, and resilience at our heart, we’re helping children prepare for a bright future.
