History at Rood End
We want every child to feel hopeful and ambitious about their future. Our History lessons are designed to spark curiosity, help children understand different cultures, and learn about Britain’s part in world history, making sure history feels relevant and exciting for all our children.
What Do We Want Children to Get from History
History is about more than just facts. We want children to be curious and think deeply about the past. By learning about important events, people, and cultures, they gain a wider view of the world and their place in it. Our lessons encourage asking questions and seeing things from different perspectives, helping children grow enquiring minds.
How We Teach History
Our History lessons are carefully planned using the Kapow Primary History scheme, ensuring a clear progression of knowledge and skills. At the start of each lesson, children revisit what they already know, which helps them remember and feel confident.
- Working Together: Most lessons involve the whole class, so children learn from each other and work as a team.
- Key Words: We teach important history words clearly and encourage children to use them in their talking and writing.
- Clear Examples: Teachers model how to think like a historian, breaking down ideas so everyone can understand.
- Asking Questions: Children explore big questions connected to what they’re learning and write down their thoughts in their books.
- Tailored Learning: We adapt lessons to make sure every child can join in and enjoy history.
- Hands-On Resources: We bring history to life with real artefacts and special resources.
Supporting Children
To help children remember what they learn, we use:
- Knowledge Organisers: These include key facts, words, pictures, and timelines. We look at them often during lessons.
- History Timeline in the Playground: An interactive timeline that helps children see when events happened in a fun way.
- Learning Maps: These are displayed in classrooms to help children recall important information and see how their knowledge grows.
How History Fits with Our School Values
Our History lessons support Rood End’s vision by helping children become thoughtful and informed. Learning about different cultures and histories encourages respect and resilience. Working together in lessons builds teamwork, and asking honest questions helps children think clearly and share their ideas confidently.
Join Us on Our History Journey
We invite parents and the community to get involved with history learning. Talking about history at home and encouraging questions can really help children enjoy and understand the past. Together, we can support children to grow into curious and respectful learners.
