Geography at our school

We want every child to feel curious and excited about the world around them. Our geography lessons help children understand their local area and the wider world, encouraging them to respect different places and people. We believe that knowing about both human and physical geography helps children become confident, caring, and thoughtful learners who can work well with others.

What We Want for Our Children

By the time children leave Rood End, we want them to:

  • Be curious about different places and environments.
  • Respect people and cultures from all over the world.
  • Understand how people and nature affect each other.
  • Feel confident using geographical words and skills to explore their surroundings.

How We Teach Geography

We follow the Kapow planning, which helps teachers build on what children already know and learn new things step by step. Some key ways we teach geography are:

  • Last Term, Topic, Teach: At the start of lessons, children spend a few minutes discussing previous learning to reinforce and remember key key learning.
  • Teaching Vocabulary: We introduce new geography words clearly to help children talk, listen, and write about what they learn, especially for those still learning English.
  • Showing How It’s Done: Teachers model how to think about geography questions and tasks, then gradually let children try on their own.
  • Big Questions: Children explore different questions through the lessons, writing their ideas and answers as they go.
  • Hands-On Learning: We use maps, globes, compasses, and other tools to make lessons fun and real.

Supporting Every Child

We know that some children can find learning new things tricky. To help everyone:

  • We adjust learning when needed, so all children can join in and succeed.
  • Extra help is given to those who need it to meet their goals.
  • We use knowledge organisers and learning maps in classrooms and books to help children remember key facts and ideas.

Bringing Our Values to Life in Geography

Geography is about more than facts – it’s about growing as a person. Through our lessons, children learn to:

  • Show respect for different cultures and environments.
  • Build resilience by tackling tricky questions.
  • Work together through group tasks and discussions.
  • Be honest about their learning and understand different points of view.
  • Include everyone so all children can enjoy geography.

Geography in Action

  • Children use maps and compasses to explore the local area, connecting learning to real life.
  • Children compare different places and think globally.
  • Knowledge organisers help children remember facts about natural features like mountains and rivers, and human features like towns and farms.
  • Lessons start with what children know from their own experiences and grow to include places far away.

Get Involved!

We welcome parents and the community to join us by:

  • Talking with children about what they’re learning.
  • Visiting local parks and landmarks to support learning.
  • Exploring maps and geography together at home.

Together, we can help children grow into curious, respectful, and thoughtful people ready to make a difference
