Design and Technology at Rood End
We believe every child can be creative and curious. Our Design & Technology (DT) lessons help children think like inventors and makers, giving them the chance to explore ideas, solve problems, and create things they’re proud of. It’s all about building skills that will help them in school and beyond.
What We Want for Our Children in DT
We want every child to:
- Understand the design process—from coming up with ideas, planning, making, to checking how well it worked.
- Feel confident to try new things and think creatively.
- Work well with others, sharing ideas and being respectful.
- Keep going even when things get tricky.
- See how design and technology affect their world and community.
What Happens in DT Lessons
Our DT lessons follow a clear plan so children build their skills step-by-step, using the Kapow Primary scheme for planning. Here’s how we do it:
-
Knowledge Organisers:
At the start of each topic, children receive a simple guide with key skills, words, pictures, and ideas to help them understand what they’ll be learning. -
Knowledge Catchers:
These activities let children show what they have learnt so far, helping both teachers and children see how well new ideas are understood. -
Talking About Words:
We teach important DT vocabulary clearly and use it often so children can explain their thinking. -
Hands-On Learning:
Children get to make and try things out, with plenty of support and resources ready for them to use. -
Everyone Can Join In:
We make sure all children can take part, giving extra help when needed, so no one misses out.
How Our Values Shape DT
DT at Rood End is about more than making things-it's about living our values:
-
Respect and Teamwork:
Children listen to each other and work together kindly. -
Resilience:
They learn to keep trying, fixing their work, and improving. -
Inclusion:
We make sure every child, no matter their background or ability, can join in and succeed. -
Honesty:
Children honestly think about what worked well and what could be better next time.
Why DT Matters Here
Our DT lessons give children a chance to try new things in a fun, hands-on way to build confidence, creativity, and communication skills. It’s a safe space to learn and grow.
How Parents and Carers Can Help
We’d love for you to:
- Look at the knowledge organisers with your child to support their learning.
- Come to DT events where children show off their projects.
- Chat with your child about what they’re making and learning.
Your support helps us work together to inspire every child.
Design & Technology at Rood End Primary is about sparking creativity and building skills for life. Together we are helping children become confident, capable creators, helping every child design a brighter future.
