Computing at Rood End
Our computing lessons are designed to help children gain the skills and confidence they need to use technology safely and effectively. We focus on values like respect, resilience, inclusivity, teamwork, and honesty, making sure every child gets the chance to build important digital skills for life.
What We Want for Our Computing Curriculum
We want every child to finish their time at Rood End feeling confident and responsible when using digital technology. Our curriculum is carefully planned using Kapow Primary resources for medium term plans that build on what children already know and help them develop key computing skills step-by-step. This way, children become independent learners who can navigate the digital world with ease.
How We Teach Computing
- Following Kapow Medium Term Plans: Our lessons follow clearly sequenced plans that cover all the important computing concepts and skills.
- Using Kapow Primary Resources: We use videos and resources from Kapow that help teachers explain concepts clearly and support children’s learning.
- Regular Retrieval Practice: At the start of each lesson, children spend time answering quick questions about what they learned before, including online safety.
- Teaching Key Vocabulary: Computing words are taught explicitly so children become familiar with them.
- Step-by-Step Modelling and Support: Teachers demonstrate each part of a task clearly, with extra help provided through a tailored curriculum when needed.
- Showing What They’ve Learned: Each class records one piece of work each lesson to track progress.
- Knowledge Organisers and Catchers: These tools help children remember important facts and vocabulary.
Building Skills and Confidence
Our computing lessons help children build skills progressively, encouraging perseverance when tasks are challenging and promoting teamwork. We also support children to explain their thinking clearly, fostering critical thinking. They learn to work independently and collaboratively, preparing them well for the future.
How Our Values Shine Through
- Hope and Ambition: We inspire children to believe in themselves as digital learners ready to succeed in a fast-changing world.
- Respect and Inclusivity: Every child, regardless of background or ability, has the opportunity to learn and grow in computing.
- Resilience: Through practice and support, children develop the determination to keep going despite difficulties.
- Teamwork: Group and paired activities help children develop communication and collaboration skills.
- Honesty: Online safety lessons teach children to use technology responsibly and ethically.
